Global Commission on Drug Policy

The Global Commission on Drug Policy (GCDP) was established in 2009, with its aim being to bring to the international level an informed, science-based discussion about humane and effective ways to reduce the harm caused by drugs to people and societies. One of the priorities of the Commission is to secure the availability of controlled pharmaceuticals to all patients in need globally; this includes opiates for treating pain, medical cannabis and cannabinoids for treating a broad spectrum of severe syndromes, and a number of other medicines used in psychiatry and somatic medicine. The GCDP is formed of 24 commissioners – inter alia, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, former US Secretary of State George P. Shultz, eight Presidents from Latin America and Europe, and eminent global entrepreneurs, intellectuals and politicians.
